I think that it is great all this money is being put into finding the cause of Autism. Really I do. I do not want other families to have to deal with the level of uncertainty that I do in my family. My boy is wonderful, but he is not the picture of Autism that you will see in all your ‘feel good’ stories. He isn’t going to be the kid who gets to shoot a basket because the basketball teams let him run it in and take the shot. He isn’t going to be the kid who gives a speech from his communication device senior year.
He is the screaming, violent child that is running down the driveway in January because he saw the vacuum cleaner and was terrified – remember, My Mop is Evil.
He is the child strapped into his wheelchair, screaming at the top of his lungs as we walk through the halls at church, grabbing at passersby because it is too crowded for him.
He is the child that has to be restrained at school because he gave his teacher a bloody nose during a meltdown and they couldn’t calm him.
I love my boy dearly – but he is a handful. He is not for the faint of heart. He is not easygoing, low-maintence or laid back.
We need to put more resources into helping parents and families. More resources into helping them cope and giving them the tools to deal with the situation in front of them. I never want to hear about another mother taking the life of her child because she was afraid, overwhelmed or didn’t know what else to do. I never want to hear again about a mother who was screaming to anyone who would listen that they needed help – only to have her cries ignored.
Do you know what resources are available to you?
Each state is different and some are really dropping the ball.
