Oh my goodness. My poor boy has been out of summer school FOR-EVER and we still have almost a week to go before he heads back to school. It’s not that I don’t love the boy. It’s not that I don’t want him to have a break. It IS that the poor child hasn’t had any of his services for WAY too long.
For those of you who may not know what I’m talking about, my boy gets therapy in school. He has a speech therapist who helps him in learning to communicate and understanding different types of language. They work on body language, spoken language and the program on his iPad designed to help him communicate with the world. He has sensory tools at school that help him to regulate his body. What does that mean? It means that sometimes his body needs certain input and if he doesn’t get it, it makes life really hard for him. Controlling himself becomes difficult, if not impossible. This is what we miss most over the summer.
Don’t understand that?
Imagine you are a smoker and you suddenly didn’t have cigarettes. No warning and not by your choice.
Imagine you are a coffee or soda drinker and you didn’t get your coffee you wanted today.
Now behave, without being able to talk. Don’t get cranky when people don’t understand what you are trying to say. Don’t hide in your bedroom. Come out and face the world and don’t let people annoy you.
Now you get the idea.
The poor kid NEEDS his services because there are other kids in the house. Other kids that are making ME crazy. I can only imagine what they are doing to him. Thankfully I have coffee 🙂
